Best Scopes for 30 30 Rifles : Killer Models With Weatherproof & Shockproof Construction & Multi-Coated Lens — Full Reviews With Buying Guide
- Erik Himmel
Growing up in a house of hunters meant that I was always familiar with all different types of guns. I was never actually allowed to use them when I was young though. There was a rule in my house that you only got to shoot your first gun on your sixteenth birthday, but it was a gun of your choice.
My dad already knew I would go for a bolt-action rifle. I always found them the most interesting when I had to compare them to pistols or shotguns. I could never hit my target, which was strange because once I tried other guns, I was able to hit pretty accurately. My father bought a scope for his .30-30 rifle when I was 17 and I have not touched another gun or any other type of scope ever since.
Every shot I take with our rifle using a scope is accurate and hits exactly where I expect it to. I can stretch out the maximum range at which my rifle can shoot, and I just have a much more comfortable experience. I have tried many different scopes over the years and decided to make a list of my favorite, in other words, the best scopes for 30 30 rifles.

Our Product Selection Process
We had gone through a rigorous sorting and selection process before we finally got our list at hand. Initially, we spent over more than 30 hours doing online market research in order to track down the most suitable scope for 30 30 rifles. We went through hundreds of consumer reports and sifted through magazines and online forums to zero in on the models that offered the highest value for money.
That way, we were able to shortlist 22 scopes and put them to test. A group of community-based volunteers helped us conduct a series of outdoor tests on each of these scopes on our 30 30 rifles in different lighting and environmental conditions.
We closely examined the build quality, precision, accuracy, waterproofing, lens quality, lens coating, eye relief, weather sealing, magnification, aim speed, sturdiness, adjustability, and durability of the scopes.
Based on the above criteria, we championed 10 models from the rest. Then we consulted with other veteran marksmen and firearm experts to receive their valuable insights into our final models. After that, we proceeded to write full reviews elaborating our hands-on experience with the scopes and explaining their pros and cons.
Why Try the .30-30 Winchester?
.30-30 lever-action rifles have been used in both hunting and military settings for many generations. They are not the biggest rifles out there, but they are very powerful and can be used to hunt medium to large games at the right range. This is a classical American weapon that is famous all around the world.
They are quite famous for being powerful with light recoil making them easier to use. This powerful weapon needs a scope that is just as good quality. This will make your Win 94 rifle so much more accurate and you can increase your shooting range as well. These are not long-range scopes and the maximum distance you can shoot at is about 150 yards.
It is difficult for even professional shooters to shoot accurately at that distance. Scopes will make this much easier to make hunting and leisure experiences more enjoyable. If you want to maximize the accuracy and performance of a .30-30 rifle, the best you can do is add a great quality scope to the mix.
.30-30 Scopes: A Comprehensive Buying Guide
- Short-range (250 yards or less): The best magnification for this range is between 1x and 4x. Shooting accurately at short ranges can be quite difficult, but if you have the right optics, it will help.
- Medium range (250 to 500 yards): 5x to 9x is the ideal magnification range for medium-range shooting. Most scopes for .30-30 rifles are designed for this range.
- Long-range (500 yards and above): The best magnification for long-range shooting is from 9x to 12x, but this is not the only factor affecting the accuracy of your shooting at a long-range like 1000 yards.
2. Objective Lens
The diameter of the objective lens affects light transmission which will affect the brightness of your view. Ideally, you want a larger objective lens if you prefer shooting at dusk or dawn. Other aspects of your image can also be affected by the size and diameter of the objective lens.
3. Durability and Construction
Even though .30-30 rifles do not have the harshest recoil, damage from recoil is still a risk. Durable, shockproof construction is preferred by shooters, and weather resistance is also important. A lot of scopes use aircraft-grade aluminum to make them ultra-durable.
4. Variable or Fixed Magnification
The magnification power that you need is dependent on what you will be using it for. If you need a range of magnifications, then try variable power. Keep in mind that fixed magnification scopes are normally higher quality, cheaper, and they are faster.
5. First Focal Plane vs. Second Focal Plane
The main difference between the two is that the first focal plane reticles get bigger as the magnification is increased. Second focal plane reticles stay the same size regardless of magnification.
Your main concern is to know how the reticle you have chosen works. Reticles that are easy to use and they are preferred by most shooters. Consistency of quality and clarity is critical as well. Most of these scopes come with mil dot, red dot, or green-dot reticles. Again, if you use an iron sight, you wouldn’t need a reticle.
This can be a real disadvantage at long range and very short-range shooting. Side focus adjustment knobs are an important feature of scopes that long-range shooters use. For short to medium range shooting, parallax is not as much of an issue.
8. Optical Strength
Optical strength is similar to magnification, but it refers to your lenses as a whole. Better lenses and more versatile magnification ranges will affect the accuracy of your shooting.
9. Eye Relief
This refers to the distance between your eye and the eyepiece of your scope when you are aiming. Images may be too small if your eye is too far from the eyepiece, so finding the right eye relief is up to you. Bigger eye relief is recommended for anyone who wears glasses or safety goggles when they shoot.
10. Mounting Options
You need mounting rings on the barrel to attach a scope to your rifle. They come at different heights which all have pros and cons. You can choose from top mount and side mount scopes.
Having a device that is weatherproof is recommended for outdoor shooting, which is preferred by most .30-30 rifle owners. Sealed, gas-purged tubes are ideal for making these devices waterproof and fog proof for harsh weather. This is a typical feature in most modern optical devices.
12. Lens Coating
The lenses of the best scopes for 30 30 are made of high-quality glass and are fully multi-coated. There are different coatings that can be used including anti-reflective coatings. The right coating for you is dependent on how you want to use your device.
13. Turrets and Adjustments
Turrets are used to adjust the optics depending on windage and bullet drop. Some devices have fixed turrets whereas others have quick adjustment systems. Quick adjustment systems make adjusting the optics much easier and they normally retain their zero after you sight-in.
14. Warranty and Budget
Most designs in today’s market come with lifetime warranties which is generally what you are looking for. Prices range from about $77.00 to $394.00 for the best devices for .30-30 rifles.

A Word from RangerExpert
There are a lot of optical devices that would make a .30-30 rifle more accurate, but these are the best scopes for 30 30 rifles no doubt. The brands featured in our list are quality and all of them have great warranties. Every option we have is affordable and will not make too much of a dent in your wallet whether you are on a budget or not.
Our favorite is the Vortex Optics Crossfire II 2-7x32 Riflescope. It is the best value for money and has features that are ideal for .30-30 rifles. The magnification range is important when looking for a scope for these rifles because they are accurate at short to medium-range shooting. We took this into consideration when compiling this list. Remember to practice safety when shooting and most importantly, enjoy it.
1. How did the .30-30 get its name?
Ans. This caliber is named because it had a 30-caliber bullet diameter, and originally it was loaded with 30 smokeless powder grains. Few bolt-action rifles have been built for this cartridge because of the rimmed case that would typically be unsuited for rifles with bolt action.
2. What is the maximum distance that I can sight in my .30-30?
Ans. Testing shows that the maximum distance that a .30-30 can be sighted in is 150 yards. At 200 yards, bullets land 8 inches low and almost twice that at 250 yards. The less the distance you sight in, the more accurate your shots will be.
3. Is .30-30 a good caliber for deer hunting?
Ans. Yes, most .30-30 rifles are perfect for hunting deer. The cartridge is considered medium-range and is good at taking down medium to large game, making it ideal for deer hunting.
4. What is a .30-30s trajectory at 100 yards?
Ans. This caliber is powerful enough that it does not drop at 100 yards. It tends to drop at 200 yards and up. When it begins to drop, it does so drastically, almost doubling with every 50 yards.
5. How far can you shoot a .30-30 Winchester accurately?
Ans. 30 30s can shoot accurately to a distance of 200 yards. Bullet drop will start at this distance, but it is still fairly simple to make accurate shots at this distance.
